Your Parents Raise You To Live Their Lives Your Parents Raise You To Live Their Lives Well, I don't think that, that is true but there are always exceptions. For the most part I just think that one's parents raise them according to the mistakes which they have made through out the course of their life. The only answer for my reasoning is that through out my life I have made graver mistakes more often than most. I tried to help my brother and sister grow up accordingly, which proved not to work because I can't live their lives for them, they will have to learn from their own mistakes, like me, yet not to the extent. My parents tried to the same for me, which was worthless, but they still tried, which I have to give them credit for. It must have been tough to keep up with me as they had. I think that life is all about making mistakes and learning from them. All I can say is that your life is your own you can do what you want with it and you're the only one that can control it, with influence of course. Current Events

Huck Finn Essay Huck Finn Essay Maddie Huckleberry Finn Essay 3/3/14 In the 1840ââ¬â¢s society was taught that blacks were not the same as whites, not only by the color of their skin on the outside, but that they were different on the inside to. The way blacks were treated was unjust and dehumanizing. Throughout the novel Twain illustrates how poorly blacks were treated, but also shows that not every single person felt the same way towards blacks. Hucks relationship with Jim is a perfect example of how white people thought they were better than blacks, but as the novel goes on Huck seems to realize that blacks are just like whites. In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, society believes that they are not racist because it was so natural at the time to have slaves, this novel demonstrates how society can be unjust, cruel, and inhumane, but also how not everyone feels the same towards blacks. For blacks in the 1840ââ¬â¢s they barely had any rights and if they did have a certain right white people would become angry and tr y to get that right taken away. At this point in time free black men did have a few rights and one of them was voting. White people did not like this at all, especially Hucks drunk father, Pap. He was not so popular in the town because of his bad habits when he was drunk. ââ¬Å"It was ââ¬Ëlection dayâ⬠(37) and Pap ââ¬Å"was just about to go and voteâ⬠(37) if he ââ¬Å"warnââ¬â¢t too drunkâ⬠. Pap had claimed that he ââ¬Å"drawed outâ⬠(37) because he found out ââ¬Å"there was a state in the country where theyââ¬â¢d let that nigger voteâ⬠(37). Pap was furious that the government would let a black person vote because no one saw them as equal, so Pap claimed that he will ââ¬Å"never vote agââ¬â¢inâ⬠(37). Even though Pap was too drunk to vote he still would not have voted because they were letting blacks have the same right as them, which was completely against society at the time. This is another way that we can prove that society has taught white people to believe that they are better and more entitled then blacks. Majority of the white population in America at this time opposed blacks having any rights because they could not see them as equal, which just proves how unjust society was in the 1840ââ¬â¢s. All blacks were treated as if they were animals that did not have any feelings. Their punishments for anything they did would have been extremely painful. You can see how white people think that blacks are animals when they chained Jim up and only have him bread and water, because he was not a human just an animal. Instead of leaving Jim there chained up he got him ââ¬Å"out of the chains in no timeâ⬠(303), which is another way Huck defies society. Huck truly cares about Jim, which was unheard of at the time because white people never saw a point in caring about blacks. The blacks enslaved in America for the most part were uneducated and had no idea about any of the outside countries or culture because their owners preferred that they were stupid. In chapter 19, Huck and Jim got into an argument about how much Jim can understand. Huck expected Jim to understand everything without any explanation, which was unreasonable of him because Jim has never had education. Huck was trying to explain to Jim that he wouldnââ¬â¢t understand some things because itââ¬â¢s in a different language and people speak differently, but Jim could barely even understand the concept that people spoke different languages. Jim repeatedly tells Huck that ââ¬Å"dey aint no sense in itâ⬠(90) and how it is ââ¬Å"ridicklousâ⬠(90). Jim had questioned Huck about how cats and cows donââ¬â¢t talk ââ¬Å"like a manâ⬠(90), but the point of it was that if we were all the same than why did people own other human beings? In the years following the Civil War, both the north and the south were conflicted about whether or not their actions were morally just or not. In his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain pointed out both the good and rather unfortunate sides of humankind and showed not only the nation, but the world what it meant to either be a good person or a bad person. He displays mankind as courageous, senseless, and selfish through the depiction of his characters Huck, Jim, Tom, the Grangerfords, Huck's father, the "King", and the "Duke". Twain displayed the courageousness of humanity through Jim and Huck Finn. Huckleberry Finn was the most courageous of all the characters because he was never afraid to embark on any of his adventures. When he and Jim discovered a crashed steamboat that held a band of murderers, Huck was brave enough to try and stop them. "But if we find their boat we can put all of 'em in a bad fix-for the Sheriff 'll get 'em" (Twain, 52-53). Huck was courageous enough to risk his life all in an attempt to put some murderers in jail. He was also courageous when he decided to help Jim escape slavery even though he thought it would meant he wouldn't go to heaven. Twain showed that Huck knew that helping to free Jim was the right thing to do, even if it would condemn him when Huck thought, "All right then, I'll go to Hell" (Twain, 162). Jim was also very brave when he decided to run from slavery because he knew that to do so would put his own life in peril. He exemplified the amount of bravery and effort he put into escaping the holds of the Phelpses with the quote, "I laid dah under de shavins all day. I 'uz hungry, but I warn't afeared: bekase I knowed ole missus en de wider wuz goin' to start to de camp-meetn" (Twain, 33). Another time Jim proved to be exceedingly courageous was when he showed that he was willing to give up his freedom to save Tom Sawyer's life. The doctor that treated Tom for his wounds pointed out this valor when he said, "I never see a nigger that was a better nuss or faithfuller" (Twain, 215). Both Huck Finn and Jim proved to be courageous and selfless, thusly portraying Twain's belief of what a good person should be like. Mark Twain portrays the flaw of senselessness in mankind through his characters Tom Sawyer and the Grangerford family. Tom's schemes are what prove him to be absolutely the most irrational and absurd characters in the novel. Huck describes Tom's plan to free Jim by saying, "every time a rat bit Jim, he would get up and write a little in his journal whilst the ink was fresh" (Twain, 201). Had Tom not come up with such a ridiculous plan, he would have saved Jim a lot of pain. Another of Tom's plans that were completely absurd was when he said, "the plan was for us to run him down the river, on the raft, and have adventures plumb to the mouth of the river, and tell him about his being free, and take him back home on a steamboat, in style, and pay him for his lost time... and then he would be a hero, and so would we"(Twain, 219). The Grangerford family was also a mere bit idiotic at times. When Huck questioned Buck Grangerford about the background of the feud between his family and the Shepardsons, Buck replied with a casual, "Laws, how do I know? It was so long ago" (Twain, 82). Though Buck acknowledged that fact that the feud was nonsense, he continued killing the Shepardsons, which proved him and his family to be irrational. Using the Grangerfords as an example, Twain was poking at the fact that during the Civil War, many people thought that the battling was pointless, yet they continued to participate in it because they were absolutely irrational. à à à à à Unfortunately I was not able to make it to our last site visit and to our group meeting. I had a terrible cold and needed rest. However, I emailed one of my group members so that she could up date me. I also made sure to call my students and apologize for my absence. à à à à à Today, Monday I went back to site and we had overhead presentation. The students were really involved and eager to participate. In the overhead pictures of different people were shown and the students were asked to describe the person. Many of the students commented that the people in the picture looked like drug dealers, rapist and so on. Most of their comments were negative towards what the individuals in the picture looked like. The students were really shocked to find out that all of those people in the picture were university students and really successful. This was our introduction and then we broke into groups and discussed the prejudice article. à à à à à I was really happy that both my students were really eager to express their opinion and to share their experiences with prejudice. They were really trying to analyze the negative and positive effects of prejudice. I have a wonderful group and I can see that they are becoming more and more involved each time. What would you do if you really loved the student? à à à à à I think that because I live the students and because I have opened up to them they are becoming more interested and involved. I really enjoy listening to my students responses to their ways of thinking and seeing things. Therefore, to show them my love I respect their ideas and I encourage them to think and to question everything. We were really working on our analytical skills and I hope to improve my own analytical skills through them. I am really happy with my students but I wished they took the homework a bit more serious. I think that because they have a week until we meet again they postpone the homework for so long that they eventually forget to do it or they just loose the assignment. But since I car for my students I have decided to make it my responsibility to remind them at least two days before. I plan to call them at and inquire on their week and end the call with a quick reminder to do their reading assignment and written note and questions for our n ext discussion.

Ivana Aleksich November 1, 2012 Film Review: ââ¬Å"Drowned Outâ⬠The way this documentary was filmed shows the people who contributed to the film to living and working alongside the villagers and I found this helped capture the candid interviews and the honest and realistic impact of the way villagers of living in India due to the government dam project. Not only do people have to make a choice of whether they Move to the slums in the city, accept a place at a resettlement site or stay at home and drown. This place is not just a piece of land where they live but it is their home, their identity.This reminds me personally of my connection with Serbia. My family has to leave their homeland because of war and invasion. My family did not see this as moving to a better place, but saw it as their homeland being destroyed. Who they are as people dead in a place that no longer exists like it once had. This is how I see the people in the villagers, they are being forced to say goodbye t o a certain part of them, their family, and ancestors forever. In the student presentation relating to the world bank and dams refers to something very important to villagers. Non-material things are what are important to the villagers.After the dam is built, I will drown out the cultural traditions of the villagers, create development of affected communities in isolation, and cultural shift, new lifestyles and attitudes. The documentary follows the villagers of Jalsindhi. This village is in Madhya Pradesh on the banks of the Narmada River about ten miles upstream from the Sardar Sarovar project. The 76 villages struggle through a battle against the dam. The lead character is Luharia Sonkaria, who is the villageââ¬â¢s medicine man, a role that was his fatherââ¬â¢s and grandfatherââ¬â¢s before him. The government provides them no viable alternatives.The government offers unusable land a hundred miles away or a small sum of money in compensation for their river-side land. The film documents hunger strikes, rallies, and a six year Supreme Court case, and finally follows the villagers as the dam fills and the river starts to rise. The documentary features Arundhati Roy, who has been an outspoken activist bringing international attention to the controversy. Government aims to provide electricity, irrigation and drinking water to tens of millions of people. Government is confident in this claim. The government has a completely difference views of the impact of the dam.They believe the dam will help the people and make them happy. But the government has nothing to lose from this dam project because the people in government do not live in the area that the dam is supposed to floor. The villagers have everything to lose and millions of them did. This brings up the struggle between the rich and the poor/the powerful and the less powerful. The big question that is stated in this documentary is, ââ¬Å"For whom is this development for? â⬠The government trie s to convince the villagers that this is for them and their benefit, but in reality the villagers are not being taken into account for this dam project.This dam development is solely for the purpose the one thing that is universally valued: money and the power of government. Villagers and poor people are not at level in society where they can rely on money and power. They believe in things that the government and money could never find important. Villagers value their traditions and their old lifestyle. The government and the world bank is working to become more modern and to gain more money. For this reason alone, the government is aware of what will happen to the villagers but the government could not understand how hard this project will hurt the villagers and their lives.
